How to Pack an Emergency Go-Bag (and Still Sleep Comfortably)

When a storm warning turns into an evacuation order, there is rarely time to think. A go-bag, packed and ready before you need it, lets your family leave in minutes with everything that matters. Most checklists cover food, water and documents. Very few cover sleep, even though rest is what keeps everyone calm, patient and healthy through a stressful few days.

Here is a simple way to build a go-bag that covers the essentials and helps everyone rest wherever you end up.

Start with the basics

Emergency agencies generally recommend packing enough supplies for at least three days. For each person, include:

  • Water and food: bottled water and easy, no-cook snacks such as granola bars, nuts and dried fruit.

  • First aid and medication: a basic first-aid kit plus a supply of any prescription medicines.

  • Documents: copies of IDs, insurance papers and important phone numbers in a waterproof bag.

  • Light and power: a flashlight, spare batteries, a power bank and phone charging cables.

  • Cash: small bills, in case card machines are down.

  • Clothing and hygiene: a change of clothes, a warm layer, toothbrush, wipes and hand sanitizer.

Don't forget a place to sleep

Whether you end up at a relative's home, a hotel lobby or an emergency shelter, you may spend the night on a hard floor. A few nights without proper rest leaves adults exhausted and children unsettled. A portable air pad changes that, as long as it is light enough to carry and quick to set up.

Comfe AirPad® Adult rolled up and strapped for packing

The Comfe AirPad® was designed for exactly this. It packs into its own drawstring carry bag that you can sling over your shoulder, and it has a built-in rechargeable pump: close the valves, press the power button and it is fully inflated in about 75 seconds. There is no separate pump to pack. A built-in pillow with an adjustable air valve means one less thing to carry.

Pack for every member of the family

  • Children: add a favorite small toy or book, and a sleeping pad sized for them. The Comfe AirPad® Youth is 4 ft long, made for kids.

  • Older relatives: pack extra medication, glasses and any mobility aids.

  • Pets: food, water, a leash and vaccination records.

Keep your go-bag ready

  • Store it near the door or in your car so you can grab it fast.

  • Check it every six months: replace expired food, water and medicine, and update documents.

  • Recharge your devices when you check the bag. A full charge of the Comfe AirPad® pump usually lasts about 5 months.

  • Add a Repair Kit, so a small puncture never costs you a night's sleep.

Rest easy, be ready

Preparing a go-bag takes an afternoon, and it gives your family something priceless when an emergency hits: the ability to leave quickly and rest wherever you land. Comfort is not a trend. It is part of being prepared.
